Nirpathuve nadapathuve parapathuve…

Movie: Bharathi
Poet: Subramanya Bharathi
Singer: Harish Raghavendra
Music: Ilayaraaja

(1)Nirpathuve nadapathuve parapathuve,
neengalellam soppanam thaano,
pala thotra mayakangalo,
what ever I perceive as standing (still), walking and flying around me,
are all of these just my dreams?
are they mere illusions that my thoughts make me beleive of this world?

(2)karpadhuve ketpadhuve karudhuvadhe,
neengalellam arpa maayaygalo,
ummul aalndha porul illaiyo,
what ever I learn, I hear , I imagine,
are all these petty illusions?
don’t all these thing have a deeper meaning/significance?

(3)vaanakame ilaveyile maracharive,
neengalellam kaanalin neero,
verum kaatchi pilai thaano,
The sky, the first rays of sunlight, the trees along slopes,
are all of you merely a mirage?
are these just a result of my erroneous view?

(4)ponathellam kanavinaipol,
puthainthelinthe ponathanaal,
naanum or kanavo,
intha gnalamum poi thaano,
whatever went (was lost) seems like a dream,
seems like all was buried in the past,
similarly am I also just a dream ( I will also be gone/forgotten one day),
isn’t this universe ( can also be interpreted as knowledge) a false entity?

(5)kaalam endre oru ninaivum,
kaatchi endre pala ninaivum,
kolamum poygalo,
angu gungalum poygalo,
The thought we perceive as time,
The multiple thoughts that arise due to our power of vision (of the space around us),
are all these forms (appearances) mere lies?
there, what we perceive as characters(qualities of a person), aren’t these too lies?

(6)kaanpadhellam maraiyum endraal,
maraindhadhellam kaanbamandro,
naanum or kanavo,
intha gnalamum poy thaano.
if it is true that, what ever we see today will vanish eventually,
would we ever be able to see that which vanished? ( isn’t this a paradox)
am I just a dream,
isn’t this universe ( can also be interpreted as knowledge) a false entity?

Ennena seithom ingu….

Movie: Mayakkam enna Poet: Selvaraghavan Singer: Harish Raghavendra Music Director: G.V Prakash

(1)Ennena seithom ingu idhuvarai vaalvile, engengu ponom vandom, vidhi ennum perile, kaanadha thuyaram kannile, oyatha salanam nenjile,
what all have we done here (on earth) till now in our lives, where all have gone, in the name(pretext) of destiny, our eyes carry the sorrow, that we never saw (we even worry in anticipation of difficulties, which never occurred to us), our hearts(minds) are constantly wavering,
(2)Iraivaa, sila neram enniyadhundu, unnai thedi vandhadhum undu, sannadhiyil salanam velluma iraivaa,
Oh God, I think about this sometimes, I (have) come in search of you (seeking answers to these confusions), in your temple will this wavering win over ( or will you show me the truth), oh god,
(3)anbaana punnaigai seivaai, alagaana paarvayil kolvaai, nee enbadhu naan allava, vidai solgiraai, kallaga irupavan neeya, kaneerai thudaipavan poiya, ul nenjile unai vaanginaal, karai serkiraai,
please show me your loving smile, kill me(amaze) with your beautiful gaze, aren’t you and me the same? you are giving me the answers, are you just a stone? “you wipe people’s tears” – is it false? if one imbibes you in with all his heart(with deep devotion), you make him reach the shore (final destination),
(4)vaalkaiyin porulthaan enna, vaalndhuthaan paarthaal enna, kathai solgiraai bayam kolgiraai,
what is the meaning of this life? what harm is it if we live it to its full and see? why is it that we keep making stories, we become afraid ?
(5)kaalai sooriyanin aadhikama, paadum paravaigalum bodhikuma,
is it that the might of the morning rising sun, and the chirping of the birds are telling us something?
(6)unathu arasaangam perum kaadu, ulagam adhile oru siru koodu, unnai annaithukondu ullamurugi nindraal, sudum theeyum sugamaai theendidum,
your empire is a huge forest, in which this earth is just a small nest, if we embrace you and stand with our melted hearts, even the burning fire will seem like a caress in joy,
(7)ullirukkum unnai thedi, oyaamal alaivor kodi, karuvaraiya nee kadal alaiyaa,
searching for you, people relentlessly roam around not knowing that you are within each one of them, are you the womb (which gives life) or are you in the enormity of the waves of ocean,
(8)malaigal erivarum oru koottam, nadhiyil moolgi elum perum kootam,
one group of people climb hills in search of you, another group dips in the river in search of you,
(9)yennil kadavul yaar thedugirom, poiyai avarin pin odugirom, kannai paarka vaitha kallai pesa vaitha, perumthaayin karunai marakirom,
we search for god in numbers ( numerology),
we falsely follow people who profess such things,
however we forget the compassion of our great mother,
who made us see things and make us realize you (god) even in stones
